Come Lord Jesus

I think we were all tired that night. After the Christmas and New Years Holiday, the first day back to work seemed to drag on forever. I must confess that I was not looking forward to the Executive Committee meeting that night and the extra hour we scheduled to review important budget items made it worse.

Like all Ministries, we start the meetings with a prayer or devotion. The Executive Committee is blessed with both Pastors and we can count on one of them to provide a refreshing and uplifting prayer to open the meeting.

Pastor Janet and Pastor Frank hesitated and asked if anyone would open with a prayer. Frankly, I’m not too spontaneous especially when it comes to impromptu praying. I looked to Gary Bague, then to Steven Kammerer and then to Sheri Groenveld.

Before any of us could volunteer, Sheri’s son Luke raised his hand like he does every Sunday at the Children’s Sermon and said, “I’ll say a prayer.”

“Come Lord Jesus and be our guest, and let these gifts to us be blessed. Amen.”

Perhaps it was the innocence of the prayer. Perhaps it was the fondness of the prayer we say with our family during supper, but the day’s burden was immediately lifted.

It wasn’t until later that night that I realized how a simple prayer was so powerful. Luke, innocent yet wise beyond his age, reached out to Jesus and invited him to our meeting and into our hearts.

From the smallest child to the eldest member of Holy Trinity, God has given us an abundance of gifts. Our gifts — time, abilities, offerings and even simple prayers — are blessed and grow the body of Christ.

We are all burdened from time to time. We rush though life from one event to the next. Relax, and if you get discouraged, just remember what to do, reach out to Jesus, he’s reaching out to you.

Our Middle Name is Evangelical

Growing up as a child, I was embarrassed of my middle name “Ole.” My parents proudly named me “Howard” after their good friend Howard Hodnet, and “Ole,” after my dear Grandpa Ole Remmen. Whenever someone used my middle name, I knew I was in trouble if it came from my Mother or was being poked fun at by some child.

Despite my embarrassment, I survived the childhood teasing of my middle name. Now after 40 plus years of growing up, I recognize my parent’s wisdom in their choice of my name: good friendship and love and honor for my Grandfather.

Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church also has a middle name: “Evangelical.” I often wonder why we use shorten forms our Church’s name such as “Holy Trinity” or “Holy Trinity Lutheran” and leave out “Evangelical.” Perhaps the shorter versions are more convenient use? I know that it is difficult to squeeze “Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church” onto our offering checks we write each week.

Holy Trinity’s “parents” also chose a wise name for our Church: for the love of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Spirit, three-in-one; and, Evangelical – to share the good news that there is salvation through Christ.

In 2 Timothy 4:2, the Apostle Paul writes to Timothy: “Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage – with great patience and careful instruction.” In this season of Lent, Easter and soon to follow Pentecost, are we prepared to live up to our middle name and share the good news?

Like Paul, I encourage you to share with your family, friends and neighbors the good news of Christ. Invite them to Holy Trinity “Evangelical” Lutheran Church to hear the Word of God that through Christ there is salvation.

Evangelism

Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage -- with great patience and careful instruction. -- 2 Timothy 4:2

Evangelism -- simple definition: just tell the good news that Jesus is our Lord and Savior.

Yes? No? Maybe? This one is too hard to decide. I'll have to read the recommendations first.

Holy Trinity Lutheran Church

Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church. I've been very busy updating the HTLC. We ran out of bandwidth on the Dec 12 and had to update to a new server.

Luckly I was able to get backup of the mySQL databases before the host was completely shutdown. (I must remember to backup weekly.) Reinstalling everything wasn't too bad but I had a few days to kill before the DNS was updated with the new IP address.

The content management we were using was something that I wrote. It was adequate for what was needed but could be improved. I've been looking at replacing it with Blogger, WordPress or Moveable Type.

I created a Blogger for HTLC and used a template that was similar to site format. (Thank goodness for CSS.) After the DNS were updated, I adapted the template for WordPress. I think WordPress is the way to go (sorry Blogger).
